Signals of Scrap Battery Price Increase Are Clear, Imported Crude Lead Supplements Domestic Secondary Crude Lead, Prices Show Loosening [SMM Scrap Battery & Secondary Crude Lead Weekly Review]

SMM September 26:

As the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday approaches, coupled with the farming season in the north, some recyclers slowed down their recycling business, while producers' willingness to stockpile before the holiday increased. Additionally, production resumptions of secondary lead smelters that previously halted are expected to be concentrated after the holiday, and some operating smelters feared price increases in the future, leading them to raise purchase offers for waste lead-acid batteries within the week. The mainstream market price for scrap e-bike lead-acid batteries with tax was 9,900–10,050 yuan/mt. According to some downstream lead-acid battery producers, consumption of EV batteries improved at this stage, but the retirement volume in the scrap battery market showed no significant improvement.

Although domestic secondary crude lead prices remained firm, they pulled back slightly due to supplementary imports. As of September 26, 2025, the mainstream ex-factory price for secondary crude lead was 15,750–15,850 yuan/mt. In addition, due to increased inflows of imported lead ingots, self pick-up offers for overseas arrivals this week pulled back WoW; for example, Japanese crude lead arriving at Shanghai port was quoted at parity or small premiums against the SMM #1 lead average price last week, but this week's offers were at discounts of 150–100 yuan/mt against the SMM #1 lead average price.

Lead prices were in the doldrums, while secondary lead smelters maintained firm offers due to losses. The mainstream spot order ex-factory prices including tax narrowed the discount to the SMM #1 lead average price by 100 yuan/mt, shifting to a premium of 0–25 yuan/mt, with some smelters halting offers and sales.

Pre-holiday stockpiling by downstream enterprises had largely concluded, and a few had already entered the holiday period, completely suspending procurement. Next week, secondary lead smelters will enter a concentrated wave of production halts and holidays, resulting in sluggish trading activity in the spot market. Offers for spot refined lead orders were sparse, with prices moving in line with the market.

Sluggish Transactions in Domestic Secondary Crude Lead Market, Prices at 15,250-15,400 Yuan/mt
The domestic secondary crude lead market experienced sluggish transactions. As of February 6, 2026, the ex-factory tax-exclusive offers for domestic secondary crude lead stood at 15,250-15,400 yuan/mt. Downstream refined lead and alloy smelters gradually entered the holiday period, showing weak stockpiling willingness. Overseas lead ingot suppliers basically halted transactions with China due to poor consumption in the Chinese market, with only some previously concluded shipments maintaining normal in-transit transportation. The trading atmosphere in the secondary crude lead market will continue to weaken next week.
